Epiphone Slash Signature Snakepit Les Paul

Über Epiphone Slash Signature Snakepit Les Paul

The Epiphone Snakepit was a late 1990s limited run of about 1,500, built first in Korea and later in the Czech Republic (which also made a small black run), with Epiphone's own pickups, a limited edition stamp on the back of the headstock, and no case or certificate. It copies the Gibson Custom Shop Snakepit of 1996 and 1997, announced as 100 guitars, with the pearl snake inlay and embossed Snakepit top that make it the rarest of the artist's signatures. Copies of both are common; owners ask for the headstock stamp and a photo of the guitar in hand before paying.

Owners call it the best modern Epiphone made; several bought one as teenagers in the late 1990s and still rank it above the Gibson signatures and Custom Shop Les Pauls they bought later, and those who sold theirs regret it. The stock pickups are the weak point, so the usual path is Seymour Duncan Slash pickups, CTS pots with orange drop capacitors and 50s wiring, a bone nut and better tuners, with the original parts kept for the next buyer. Since the Gibson original trades at collector prices, the Epiphone is the version people actually play.
