Maxon OD-808

Über Maxon OD-808

The Maxon OD-808 is where the Tube Screamer story begins: Maxon built the original Ibanez TS-808 for Ibanez, and the OD-808 is Maxon's own version of that circuit, the classic warm, mid-focused overdrive. It sits right at the heart of the Tube Screamer family (Maxon's OD-9 is its equivalent to the TS9, the same circuit but true bypass), and it shares its lineage, and nearly its circuit, with a Boss SD-1.

Owners who love the classic Tube Screamer voice hold the Maxon in high regard, one calls it one of his favorite pedals, others simply say it sounds great, and some prefer the Maxon's coloring to an Ibanez TS9. It is the 808 sound from the company that made the original. The way owners use it is the classic Tube-Screamer trick: put it early in the chain to push and tighten your other drives or your amp for a focused, more compact sound, and stack it, an EHX Soul Food into the Maxon is one favorite pairing, or slot it into a low-to-high gain stack alongside an SD-1, BD-2 and DS-1. The honest caveat is redundancy: the OD-808 is famously close to a Boss SD-1 (owners note roughly a single-diode difference), so having both is questionable, and a do-it-all pedal like the JHS Bonsai can cover the 808 setting well enough to make a dedicated one feel optional, though plenty of owners still hear a clear difference and want the real Maxon. For an authentic 808, it is the source.
