Über Tokai Goldstar Sound AST-62
The AST-62 is Tokai's 1962 Stratocaster copy, the slab rosewood board is what makes it a 62, wearing Tokai's own modified headstock rather than the Fender shape of the otherwise identical TST-62. The modified head was for export, the United States above all, where the Fender-headed guitars could not be sold; the UK got both. In maple it is the AST-56 with a soft V neck. The pair arrived with the Goldstar Sound era: a 50 grade with polyester finish and U- or E-stamped pickups, a 55 grade with a custom colour in polyurethane for 5,000 yen more, and from 1986 a 40 grade under the same headstock. The T in the logo went from the F-style 7 of the 1983 catalogue to a plain T by 1985. Inside: grey-bottomed pickups stamped E (hand-wound) or U (machine-wound), giving way to V and VII stamps and then no stamp by 1988, Final Prospec saddles, a brass shield plate, Alpha pots, cloth-look wire, a B-stamped pickguard whose screw holes do not match a Fender guard, matching production stamps on the neck heel and in the control cavity, and a colour code in the cavity, MR metallic red is candy apple, OR old red is Dakota red, R is Torino red. The tremolo arm is a 5 mm metric thread. Owners date theirs from 1983 to 1988; by 2002 the AST name was on Korean-made guitars.
Dating: from 1982 to 1986 the Strat copies used Fender-style serials without the year, five digits for the 58-62 slab-board copies, an L prefix for the 63-65 veneer boards, then six digits beginning with 2 from late 1986 to the end of 1988; the pots and the selector switch carry date codes. Several threads misdate later guitars as 1980s: a blank neck plate with unstamped black-bottomed pickups and a plastic switch points to the 2000s.

The AST-62 is the number one guitar of several owners here: one who has restored fifteen to twenty 1980s Tokais kept a 1983 AST-62 and a 1979 Springy Sound as the two that stood out; another calls a 1985 a monster and the best of the ten-plus Tokais owned, and the cheapest; the 62 and 56 are called the best necks Tokai made and its most underrated Strats; owners rate them equal to or better than a genuine Fender, and regret at selling one runs through the threads. The stock pickups divide them: one restorer says they do not do justice to the wood and the guitars come alive once replaced, Lollar, Manlius and OBL sets are named, while others keep the E-stamped originals and call them wonderful. One collector cautions that rare does not mean better, the AST being the domestic ST-60 with a different headstock, and another that Tokai's Gibson copies sit a notch above its Fender copies.
