Über Tokai Love Rock LS-200
The LS-200 was the top of Tokai's Les Paul line in its first era, and the name came back on the Premium Series. The vintage guitar (1979-85) was custom order only, the model above the LS-150: a two-piece solid flame maple top on a one-piece mahogany back, a rosewood board, a cashew-lacquer finish with the gold cashew logo, an ultra-thin coat with no poly undercoat, which yellows the binding and gives the inlay a honey tint, and DiMarzio PAFs, though the order offered a choice of pickups; 1985 examples carry Seymour Duncan-made PAF-style pickups. Whether the 1980-81 fretboards are Brazilian rosewood is disputed: some owners and a dealer say jacaranda, another says old-growth Indian rosewood and that the catalogues of those years list only rosewood. Documented 1980 examples weigh from 8 lb 15 oz to 9 lb 5 oz (4.22 kg), one under 9 lb, with a 1-11/16 in nut, 0.89 in at the first fret and 0.96-0.98 in at the twelfth. The headstock reads Les Paul Reborn until early or mid 1980, Reborn Old for the rest of that year and Love Rock from late 1980.
The modern LS200 is the Premium Series flagship below the Honduran-mahogany LS300s: a one-piece mahogany body with the long tenon, a solid flame top (5A-graded on the LS200 5A, with tops chosen from Tokai's photographs on custom order), nitrocellulose, brass saddles, CTS pots and orange-drop or paper-in-oil capacitors, upgraded inlay and logo materials, and a specification matching the LS214; a 1998 carries an ebony fretboard, and the 2020 LS200 VF J a violin finish in cashew oil. Owners date theirs 1998, 2009, 2014 and 2020. The model is not written on the outside: the grade is pencilled in the pickup cavity, the long tenon shows in the neck-pickup cavity, pulling a pickup shows whether the top is solid or laminated, and Tokai Japan will not identify a guitar from its serial without the certificate, though a spec request in katakana has worked.

Preisverlauf

The vintage LS-200 is spoken of as the holy grail of the line, the rarest and most expensive Tokai: one owner says his beats any Gibson he has owned, another who handles 1950s Les Pauls daily says the hype is real, and the 1979-82 high-numbered guitars are called hand-built to a standard Gibson has not matched in decades. The modern guitar gets the same tone, a 2009 5A is said to beat any Gibson its owner has had, a 2020 owner traded an American Stratocaster for his with no regrets, and it is called the best-value Les Paul in the world, close to 1958-59 specification at a fraction of a Gibson Historic or a Navigator. The dissent is about money more than the guitar: owners who buy Tokai because it is cheaper balk at what a vintage one now fetches when a used Gibson R8 or R9 costs the same, and another notes that none of the LS models is an accurate 1959 copy, metric hardware, different neck joints and pickups nowhere near a PAF. On the modern guitar the stock Gotoh MK2 PAFs read about 7.5k at the neck and 11.4k at the bridge; one owner found the bridge too hot and fitted Wolfetone Marshallhead PAFs, another's came with Monty's, and 1985 examples came with Seymour Duncan-made pickups.
