Über Tokai ST-100

The ST-100 was the top of Tokai's Springy Sound Stratocaster line from 1978, and from January 1982 the base for the made-to-order ST-120, the only model above it. The 100 grade, 100,000 yen, buys a one-piece body in sen ash (alder on some) under nitrocellulose lacquer, offered in blonde and natural to show the sen and, from 1979, golden sunburst; black examples were re-sprayed to order over a blonde body. The neck is one-piece maple with a skunk stripe and a V profile, straight to 1980, a fat soft V from 1980 to 1982, on a 7.25 in radius with a 1-11/16 in nut, and a few carry flame maple. Gold-plated hardware is standard, which only the ST-100 and ST-120 had. The pickups are Tokai's hand-wound Type-A set, stamped E on the grey bottoms (about 5.6k, the pickguard stamped A to match), until the 1 January 1982 revision brought DiMarzio VS-1 single coils; the electrics sit on a soldering plate with Tokai's own three-position switch that offers two half-positions. Owners date theirs from 1978 to 1983.

Dating: serials from 1978 begin 800 and sit on the neck heel until the large stamped neck plate arrived late that year; the 100 was stamped behind the last fret from about 1979 to mid-1980, and written in the neck cavity before that; the colour code is in the neck-pickup route, the body and neck production stamps should match, and the selector switch carries a three-digit date code.

Was Besitzer anderswo gesagt haben

Owners call the ST-100 extremely light and resonant and a pleasure to play, Tokai nailed these, and the 1980-82 fat soft V neck the one to have; a collector who has owned most Japanese Strats but never an ST-100 allows it might be the one guitar to beat a 1982 American Vintage. The dissent is about the premium: you pay for rarity and slightly better wood, not a better guitar than the ST-80; one owner of two ST-100s and two Fender JV115s prefers the Fenders' feel and chime, and the post-1982 DiMarzio VS-1 pickups are rated the weakest of the era's Strat pickups next to Tokai's own E and U sets.
