DigiTech Whammy DT

Über DigiTech Whammy DT

The DigiTech Whammy is the classic pitch-shifting pedal: an expression treadle sweeps the pitch up or down (up to an octave or more), with harmony and octave modes, the sound behind everything from dive-bombs to White Stripes' 'Blue Orchid'. The Whammy DT is the version with a Drop and Ricochet built in, so alongside the sweep it also does fixed drop-tuning (transpose down and hold) and momentary pitch bends.

The Whammy is fundamentally an expression-treadle pitch shifter: you rock the pedal to bend pitch up or down, or use its octave and harmony settings for creative leads. The DT variant folds in DigiTech's Drop and Ricochet, so it doubles as a set-and-hold drop-tuner and a momentary bender. That distinction drives the main buying advice: if what you really want is drop-tuning rather than the live sweep, owners say the simpler dedicated Drop pedal is the better tool, since the Whammy is built for the treadle. On placement, most run it near the front of the chain, right after the tuner and before the dirt, because the pitch tracking works best on a clean signal; a minority prefer it after dirt, which they admit is the unconventional way round.
