Fender Telecaster Deluxe

Über Fender Telecaster Deluxe

Most guitars under this name are the original Telecaster Deluxe, built in Fullerton, California. Fender brought it out at the turn of 1972 and 1973, and dated examples run from 1973 into the late 1970s. It pairs a Tele body with a Strat-style belly contour on the back, the large Strat-style headstock, a six-saddle Strat-style hardtail bridge, and a three-bolt neck with Micro-Tilt and a bullet truss rod nut. Two Wide Range humbuckers with CuNiFe magnets each have a volume and a tone knob, with a three-way toggle. The one-piece maple neck has a maple board with a 7.25 inch radius. Bodies are ash or alder; most are natural, mocha or black.

Necks are stamped TEL-DELX on the heel with a year, and 73 stamps turn up on guitars assembled in 1974 and 1975, so pot and pickup dates are read too. Guitars from 1973 to 1975 carry a six-digit serial on the neck plate. Measured original nuts are about 1 9/16 to 1.59 inch, necks 0.83 to 0.88 inch deep at the first fret and 0.88 to 0.97 inch at the 12th, and weighed examples 7.1 to 10.3 lb (3.2 to 4.65 kg). Originals came in a Fender hard case, and complete ones keep the owner's manual. Expect refrets and new nuts, replaced pots, pickguards and tuners (look for extra screw holes), swapped pickups, and routing or filled holes from a Bigsby, Kahler or other vibrato.

Reissues made in Japan, Mexico and the US also carry this name.
