Fender American Standard Stratocaster

Über Fender American Standard Stratocaster

The American Standard Stratocaster is the US-made Strat Fender began building in late 1986 at its new Corona, California plant. It has an alder body (ash on Sienna Sunburst), a maple neck with a maple or rosewood board, a 25.5 inch scale, a 9.5 inch radius, 22 medium jumbo frets, a 1 11/16 inch nut and a two-point synchronized tremolo, with a master volume, two tones and a five-way switch.

Ones built in 1987 and 1988 carry leftover E4 serial decals, so date them by the pencil date on the neck heel. Early guitars have a medium C neck and a TBX tone control with a center detent; later ones replaced it with a no-load tone control and a hotter bridge pickup, and later necks are a Modern C with a satin back. From 2000 it was sold as the American Series and the name returned in 2008; examples from then on have bent steel saddles and a copper-infused steel block instead of solid saddles, and by 2013 it came with Custom Shop Fat '50s pickups. Later serials read N plus the year's last digit in the 1990s, Z in the 2000s and US plus two digits from 2010; the guitar can be a year younger than its serial.

Weighed examples come in at about 7.4 to 8.4 lb (3.4 to 3.8 kg), and measured early necks run about 0.81 to 0.85 inch deep at the first fret. Check the neck pocket and bridge posts for hairline finish cracks, and ask whether the pickups and tuners are original.
