Gibson ES 339

Über Gibson ES 339

The ES-339 is the ES-335 design scaled down to roughly Les Paul or SG size: a semi-hollow with a 3-ply maple/poplar/maple top, back and sides around a maple center block, a mahogany neck and a rosewood board with 22 frets, a 12 inch radius and a 24.75 inch scale. It arrived in 2007 from Gibson's Memphis plant.

Dated examples from the late 2000s to 2014 carry '57 Classic humbuckers in both positions, Kluson-style tulip tuners and a Corian nut; the Memphis Tone Circuit keeps the treble as the volume comes down. They came with a slim 30/60 neck or a fuller '59 Rounded one, many with the Custom Shop logo on the back of the headstock and a CS serial, with a Custom Shop case and certificate of authenticity. Examples from around 2019 have a bone nut, often a satin finish, and BurstBucker, MHS II or '57 Classic pickups depending on the version. Those built in the 2020s have a Graph Tech nut, a '57 Classic neck and '57 Classic Plus bridge pickup, Grover Rotomatic tuners and orange drop capacitors, and come with a hardshell case and accessory kit. Gloss finishes include Cherry, Trans Ebony and Honeyburst.

Measured necks run from about 0.84 to 0.93 inch deep at the first fret depending on the carve, and weighed examples mostly come in at 7 to 7.8 lb (3.2 to 3.5 kg). Owners often fit other pickups (P-90-sized ones included), wiring kits or locking tuners, so ask for the originals, and look the neck over: repaired headstock and neck cracks turn up.
