Gibson Les Paul Classic

Über Gibson Les Paul Classic

The Les Paul Classic is Gibson's early-1960s-style Les Paul, made in Nashville since about 1990: a mahogany back with a maple top, a SlimTaper mahogany neck and a bound rosewood board with 22 frets and trapezoid inlays on a 24.75 inch scale. Dated examples run from 1991 to 2023.

Examples up to 2008 carry the 1960 look: a pickguard engraved 1960, a Classic truss rod cover, aged-looking inlays and uncovered humbuckers, ceramic (mostly a 496R and 500T) on those from 1994 to 2008. On 1990s and early-2000s examples the ink-stamped serial starts with the year (4 for 1994, 01 for 2001). The 2014 and 2015 versions have '57 Classic and Super '57 pickups, coil splits, a master tone and a 15dB boost; the 2014 adds a 120th anniversary banner at the 12th fret, the 2015 G-Force robot tuners, a slightly wider neck and an adjustable zero-fret nut. The 2018 version has two P-90s and no weight relief. From 2019 come Burstbucker 61R and 61T zebra humbuckers, four push-pull knobs (coil taps, phase, bridge bypass), a 9-hole weight-relieved body, a Graph Tech nut and Grover kidney tuners. Necks are 0.81 to 0.84 inch deep at the first fret; 2018 examples weigh about 9 to 10 lb (4.1 to 4.55 kg), those from 2020 to 2022 about 8.7 to 9.4 lb (3.9 to 4.3 kg).

All come in a Gibson hardshell case. Lacquer cracks show up even on 2018 examples. Swapped tuners (often replacing the 2015 robot units, sometimes leaving an extra screw hole) and pickups are common; ask what is original.
