Gibson Slash Collection Les Paul Standard

Über Gibson Slash Collection Les Paul Standard

The Slash Collection Les Paul Standard arrived in January 2020 as an unlimited Gibson USA line, no numbered run this time: four finishes at launch (Appetite Burst, November Burst, Vermillion Burst and Anaconda Burst), then a Goldtop, a left-handed Appetite Burst and, later, the Jessica. It launched at about USD 3,000, GBP 2,599 or EUR 2,999, roughly 500 above a plain 50s Standard, and UK dealers were clearing them at GBP 1,999 within a year.

Under the finish it is a 50s Standard with the artist's touches: a AAA flame maple top on a solid mahogany body with no weight relief, the thicker 50s C neck, Gibson's own Slashbucker Alnico II humbuckers, hand-wired electronics with orange drop capacitors, hardware coloured to match the finish and a brown vintage-style case. The case holds a signed truss rod cover plus a blank one, Ernie Ball strings, Dunlop Tortex picks, a certificate and the pickguard, which ships uninstalled: there is no pilot hole for it, so once fitted it stays. The front of the headstock carries no artist logo; the Scully skull drawing is on the back, a change from the front silkscreen of the 2008 to 2013 signature models. The November Burst takes its name from the tobacco burst 1959 seen in the November Rain video and reads as a tobacco burst, not a cherry one.

What separates it from the earlier limited runs: the 2018 Anaconda Burst had a slimmer neck, cream pickup rings and chrome hardware, where the 2020 Anaconda wears black rings and black hardware (owners swap to cream, and standard flat USA rings fit because they bend to the top). Some November Bursts left the factory with zebra pickups instead of black ones.

Owners who bought one talk about a top-tier USA Standard: incisive, a lot of presence, pickups that scream, a neck that feels close to a 59 reissue, and for several it became the main guitar over their custom shop models. The sceptics see a regular Standard with a different coat and a premium, tops that look cheap in dealer photos and none of the collectability of the numbered runs. The pickups divide the room: some find the Slashbuckers muddy and swap in Seymour Duncan APH-1 or APH-2 sets, others prefer them to the Duncans and leave them alone.

The one thing everyone agrees on is that no two are alike. Weights run from 3.8 to 4.75 kg with no weight relief in any of them, two-piece tops are often poorly book-matched or half plain, the November Burst comes light or dark, and the Appetite Burst shade drifted from a yellower early batch toward butterscotch later. So the advice is to choose from photos of the actual top or in person, and to send back a weak one rather than live with it.
