Ibanez TS808 Tube Screamer Reissue

Über Ibanez TS808 Tube Screamer Reissue

The Ibanez TS808 is the original Tube Screamer, the pedal that defined the mid-focused overdrive. It is a touch smoother and warmer, with slightly more midrange, than the later TS9, which is brighter and more aggressive; the two share essentially the same circuit and differ mainly in the output section. The 808 was designed for tube amps and is voiced warm around its JRC chip, while the TS9 was a later revision tweaked to suit solid-state amps.

Owners treat the TS808 as the reference Tube Screamer, and most of the talk is how it compares to the TS9. The honest consensus: the 808 is a little smoother and more mid-focused, the TS9 a little brighter and more aggressive, but the gap is subtle and easily overstated. Into a driven amp or in a band mix they are hard to tell apart, and part-to-part tolerances mean even two of the same model vary. That has a practical upshot: several near-identical options cost far less, from the Behringer TO808 to the JHS series 3 screamer (a modified TS9) and the compact mini. At the other end sits the hand-wired TS808HW, with premium parts, a tank-like build and a touch more output. Owners who already prefer the 808 tend to love it, while others shrug that it is the same sound for a lot more money.
