Xotic BB Preamp

Über Xotic BB Preamp

The Xotic BB Preamp is a boost and overdrive pedal, effectively a preamp with an active EQ and plenty of gain on tap. It is a punchy, amp-like drive rather than a clean boost, so it has more gain than many expect. There is also a Bass BB Preamp variant.

The BB Preamp inspires real loyalty: owners call it a favourite pedal or the best overdrive they have ever had, several having run one for well over a decade, and praise how dynamic it is. The thing to understand going in is that, despite the name, it is not a clean boost. It is a gainy, punchy, amp-like overdrive and preamp with an active EQ, and at least one owner was caught out expecting a clear, clean lift and found it too gainy for that. Owners treat it like a preamp in the chain: they stack a Tumnus or Tube Screamer into it, and often place it first in the chain or at the top of the overdrive section. There are cheaper clones, such as the Mosky B-Box and Joyo Zip Amp.
