Dunlop EP103 Echoplex Delay

Über Dunlop EP103 Echoplex Delay

The Dunlop EP103 Echoplex Delay is a compact digital recreation of the classic Maestro EP-3 tape echo. It is not an analog pedal, it is a digital emulation of tape echo, with an aged-tape mode and tap tempo, and it captures the warm EP-3 delay sound heard on records like the first Van Halen album. The famous EP-3 preamp (the boost and mid-hump players like Eddie used) is sold separately as the MXR Echoplex Preamp; this pedal is the delay side. It also has a notably bright white LED.

Owners who want that vintage tape-echo sound love the EP103: they call it great-sounding and reach for it to nail the first-Van-Halen-album tone, using its aged-tape mode, and one sums it up as musical and ambient, especially on longer delays, and worth every penny. Two placement notes owners share: you can run it out front like Eddie did, or last after your dirt, and remember the delay and the EP-3 preamp are separate products, so if you want the boost and mids, that is the MXR Echoplex Preamp rather than this pedal. The honest caveat is authenticity: because it is a digital emulation rather than a real tape unit, some owners find it not quite organic, one sold his and went back to an analog Carbon Copy, and the players most obsessed with the real Echoplex sound point to a Catalinbread Belle Epoch (or Belle Epoch Deluxe) as the closest thing to the genuine article. For a compact, tap-tempo tape echo, though, it delivers the classic tone.
