Dunlop GCB95 Cry Baby Standard Wah

Über Dunlop GCB95 Cry Baby Standard Wah

The Dunlop Cry Baby is the classic wah pedal, the most common and iconic of its kind, with the GCB95 as the standard model. It comes in a wide range of variants: the compact CBM95 mini and the fully adjustable 535Q, a Junior, and many signature versions (Hendrix, Cantrell, Kirk Hammett). Historically the Vox wah and the Cry Baby were the same product, and Dunlop later bought the Cry Baby line from Vox; the circuit is simple and cheap to build or mod.

Owners treat the Cry Baby as the default wah, the one they keep coming back to, and many have gigged the same unit for decades. They are built like tanks, so the usual failure is nothing more than a scratchy pot from age, a cheap clean or replacement rather than a reason to bin the pedal. A popular free tweak is the sweep mod: a simple, reversible mechanical adjustment (moving the rack and pinion or a trim pot) that shifts where the wah sweep sits, so you can tame harsh highs or add treble to taste. Against the other classics, owners tend to place the Cry Baby in the middle: the Vox is smoother and more vocal with less sweep, the Morley is cleaner, quieter and wider, and the differences between the standard wahs can be surprisingly subtle. If you want more control, the adjustable 535Q and signature models are the usual picks.
