Dunlop Silicon Fuzz Face Mini

Über Dunlop Silicon Fuzz Face Mini

The Fuzz Face is the classic Hendrix fuzz: a simple two-transistor circuit, lower in gain and more dynamic than a Big Muff. Its signature trait is that it cleans up from the guitar volume, going from a sparkly near-clean to full fuzz without touching the pedal. It comes in germanium and silicon versions, and this one is the silicon Mini.

What owners love about the Fuzz Face is its responsiveness: roll the guitar volume back and it goes from full fuzz to a sparkly near-clean, so a lot of the tone lives in your hands and your volume knob. The two flavours matter. Germanium is warmer and more vintage (early Hendrix) but drifts with temperature, so it can sound different from hour to hour; silicon, like this Mini, is brighter, more aggressive and far more stable (later Hendrix). The one rule everyone repeats is placement: the Fuzz Face is very input-sensitive and has to go first in the chain, right after the guitar and before any buffer, or it stops behaving properly. The trade-off of the classic circuit is compression, so cranking the fuzz can get muddy, and it flatters single coils more than humbuckers, which is exactly what many modern Fuzz Face-style pedals set out to improve.
