EarthQuaker Devices Special Cranker

Über EarthQuaker Devices Special Cranker

The EarthQuaker Devices Special Cranker is a compact overdrive and boost built on the vintage Electra Distortion circuit. Rather than being a big gain pedal on its own, it is designed to enhance, or specially crank, whatever it feeds, making amps and other drive pedals sound better. It is transparent, it does not cut your highs or lows, and it includes a germanium clipping option for a softer, low-gain grind. It runs on 9 volts.

Owners are effusive about the Special Cranker: one calls it a magical pedal, others simply love theirs, and it comes up as a favorite, especially for the price, and a genuine game changer. What it does is make everything around it sound better, owners describe it adding grunt, sparkle and a glassiness to anything after it and improving both amps and other drives. Because it is transparent (it keeps your highs and lows), it works beautifully at the end of the chain, where owners use it to dirty up their reverbs for a shoegaze wash, and it stacks happily after other drives (a Tube Screamer into a RAT into the Special Cranker as a final boost is one example) or in front to push an amp like an extra power tube. Try the germanium clipping at low gain for a soft grind. Reactions run to you won't be disappointed, and it pairs well with a huge range of pedals.
