The Gibson Custom Shop Snakepit Les Paul of 1996 to 1997 is the rarest of the artist's signature guitars: only about 100 were built, and collectors who know the market say around 80 percent went to Japan. It carries a flamed top in the red Snakepit finish with the snake logo in pearl inlay on the fretboard and the embossed Snakepit design on the body, an ebony fretboard, a slim neck and Seymour Duncan pickups. Counterfeits and luthier-built relic copies on Epiphone bodies circulate, so buy with care; the builder who made the originals is still around.

For many owners it is the holy grail and the most beautiful guitar Gibson has made, and those who have played one next to the SVOS and the AFD say it was something else, with a grittier, nastier voice in recorded comparisons. The people who have actually had one in their hands are cooler: a Les Paul Standard with a unique finish, nothing special in sound or feel next to the other signature models, and at today's prices a collector's item nobody dares to play; one owner who bought his new in 1996 has kept it as his baby ever since. Owners of real ones say the genuine guitars are consistent with each other, which is how they spot the fakes.
