JHS Pack Rat

Über JHS Pack Rat

The JHS PackRat is a multi-mode take on the ProCo RAT: it packs a series of famous RAT circuits and mods, owners count around eight, from the original RAT through the Turbo Rat and later variants, into one pedal, so you can select the flavor of RAT that suits you. It is part of JHS's several-pedals-in-one family alongside the Bonsai (Tube Screamers) and Muffuletta (Big Muffs).

Owners who want the RAT sound without committing to one version like the PackRat: they recommend it, describe it as a dream if you play a wide range of music, and one running it into a Valvetech amp says it sounds awesome for higher-gain work. The appeal is choice, it lets you audition and settle on the flavor of RAT that fits your rig, and the Turbo Rat mode gets named as a favorite for extra gain, which makes it handy for pushing a lower-gain amp into heavier tones. The honest counterpoint is value: several owners feel the JHS multi-series is expensive for what it is and point to cheaper, more versatile alternatives, the Drunken Beaver BAT series comes up repeatedly as a PackRat but better and cheaper, and a couple found the PackRat geared toward particular rock tones rather than a do-everything box. If you love the RAT and want every version on tap in one pedal, though, it delivers exactly that.
