Martin Standard Series HD-28

Über Martin Standard Series HD-28

The HD-28 is Martin's rosewood dreadnought with herringbone top trim, a zigzag back strip and scalloped X bracing: a solid Sitka spruce top, solid East Indian rosewood back and sides, a 14-fret body with a dovetail neck joint, a 25.4 inch scale, an ebony fingerboard and bridge with 20 frets, and a bone nut and saddle.

Two redesigns matter when you buy one. Before 2018 the bracing is not forward-shifted, the neck is a Low Profile shape with a 1 11/16 inch nut, and it has white binding, mother-of-pearl inlays, chrome enclosed tuners and a clear top. The 2018 redesign moved the bracing forward and brought a Modified Low Oval neck with a 1 3/4 inch nut, an aging-toner top, antique white binding, abalone inlays, open-gear tuners with butterbean knobs and an old-style logo. The 2025 refresh switched to Golden Era scalloped bracing, a thinner fingerboard with a beveled edge, a softer-cornered bridge, bone bridge pins, an angled nut and a vintage-style heel. Serial numbers rise with the year: about 2.2 to 2.5 million on 2018 to 2021 guitars and 2.9 million and up on the 2025 refresh. There are 1933 Ambertone, 1935 Sunburst and left-handed versions too.

Weighed examples come in at about 4.4 to 4.7 lb (2.0 to 2.1 kg). It comes with a Martin molded hard case, and used ones often keep their original paperwork and accessories. Factory Fishman or LR Baggs electronics were an option and some owners fit a pickup later, so ask how it was installed.
