The Strymon Riverside is a Drive and Distortion pedal with an analog front end and digital back end. It covers a wide gain range, from crunchy blues to high-gain and near-fuzz, with an amp-like voice, and it packs a good noise gate, MIDI presets, and a 6dB boost you can trigger from an external footswitch. Owners rate the Riverside highly, several calling it a great pedal they would recommend on any board; more than one has run it for years as their only drive, praising its plenty-of-gain range and the external boost that just makes everything better. It is a Drive and Distortion with an analog front end and digital back end, and its calling card is range: crunchy bluesy tones through to high-gain and near-fuzz, an amp-like feel, a genuinely useful built-in noise gate, and MIDI so you can store presets and switch drive voices per song. The comparison people always draw is with the Strymon Sunset. Broadly, the Riverside is one amp-like gain voice with wide range and strong EQ control, while the Sunset is a dual overdrive with more clipping types; owners split on which, with several preferring the Riverside's tone and finding the Sunset a bit boring by comparison, and a common rule of thumb is Riverside into a clean amp, Sunset into a dirty one. The main caveat is that it is a pricier, feature-heavy digital pedal, and a few players just find digital distortion does not sound real to them.
