Universal Audio Starlight Echo Station

Über Universal Audio Starlight Echo Station

The Universal Audio UAFX Starlight Echo Station is a delay pedal built around Universal Audio's high-end emulations, with standout Tape and Memory Man (analog) modes plus other delay voices, edited through the UAFX app. Owners rate its tape sound among the best available, though it has no MIDI or expression control, its enclosure is taller than most pedals, and, like other UAFX units, it is power-hungry. UA also makes a Del-Verb that combines a simpler Starlight with the Golden reverb.

For tape delay, the Starlight has real devotees, one owner enjoys it more than any other digital delay he owns or has demoed, others flatly call its tape emulation the best there is, and its Memory Man mode gets the same praise. It is widely described as a great piece of gear, and more than one owner says that with a Flint and a drive, adding a Starlight pretty much completes a board. The advice owners give is to buy it for those voices specifically, the Tape and Memory Man modes are the point, so if those delay types are not your thing, look elsewhere. Because it is expensive, they suggest the used market or waiting for a sale, and, as it is power-hungry, give it a strong isolated supply (one owner's kept restarting until he switched to a better power supply). The honest caveats mount up at the price: there is no MIDI or expression control, the app connection can be finicky, the pedal is notably tall on a board, and a couple of owners found the tape magic fades a bit with fuzz in front (where a Strymon Volante did better). But if you want a top-tier tape and analog delay in one box, it delivers the sound.
