About the Eastman MD315 F Style Mandolin
The MD315 is Eastman's all-solid F-style mandolin, with a scroll body and f-holes: a hand-carved solid Sitka spruce top braced with parallel tone bars, solid maple back and sides, and a maple neck. It is built by hand in Beijing. Scale is 13 7/8 inch (352.5 mm) and the bone nut 1 3/32 inch (27.8 mm) wide; the ebony board has a 12 inch radius and 23 Jescar frets, and string spacing at the bridge is 1 5/8 inch. It has an adjustable compensated ebony bridge, ivoroid top binding, pearl dot inlays and a single-acting truss rod, under a thin satin nitro finish. The usual color is Classic, a red-brown burst; Sunburst and Natural also turn up. A K&K Duotone pickup is an option, fitted on the MD315E. It comes with a padded gig bag, not a hard case.
Two things changed over the years. Older examples have a stamped chrome tailpiece with a cover, where current ones have Eastman's cast aluminum tailpiece; and older spec sheets list chrome hardware, generic geared tuners and D'Addario J74 strings, current ones nickel hardware, Proline J-105 tuners and D'Addario XT strings. The serial gives the year in its first two digits after any N, so N2002661 is a 2020. Owners most often replace the stock tuners and tailpiece, with Grover or Gotoh tuners the usual choice. Check the headstock scroll: it is fragile, and several have broken off.
