About the Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay 4 H
The StingRay arrived in 1976 as the first production four-string bass with an active EQ built in, and it is made in San Luis Obispo, California. It has one large Alnico humbucker near the bridge, an oval pickguard, tuners set three on top and one below (usually Schaller), a maple neck with a maple or rosewood board, a 34 inch scale and 21 frets. The body is ash on most, select hardwood on some solid colors. The back of the neck is oiled and waxed rather than lacquered; it darkens where it is played, and owners re-oil it now and then.
Examples from 1988 and 1989 have a four-bolt neck; from the 1990s on it is a six-bolt joint with a truss rod wheel at the neck end. It was sold with the original two-band EQ (treble and bass) or a three-band EQ that adds mids, with a bridge piezo as an option on three-band basses. The preamp runs on one 9-volt battery, and the steel bridge has built-in string mutes. Serials from 2000 on start with E; the maker's online serial records give the build date and original spec, and the neck pocket carries a factory date stamp. Measured nuts are about 1 11/16 inch (42.5 to 43.2 mm) wide, and weighed examples come in at about 8.5 to 10.5 lb (3.9 to 4.8 kg). It comes in a Music Man hard case with hang tags. Swapped preamps are common, so ask for the original board, and check the neck pocket for hairline finish cracks.
