About the Fractal Audio AX8 Amp Modeler/Multi-FX Processor
The AX8 is Fractal Audio's all-in-one floor amp modeler and multi-effects unit, carrying the amp modeling and effects of the Axe-Fx II rack on two processors, one of them dedicated to amps. It has over 222 amp models, more than 130 factory cabs and 512 slots for user cab IRs, plus a tuner, two global EQs, tap tempo and a looper. Each of the 512 presets holds eight scenes, and most effect blocks switch between two settings (X/Y). The steel housing carries 11 solid-state footswitches, eight LED-ring knobs for the main amp controls, five more knobs under the LCD and level knobs for the two outputs. The back has the instrument input, stereo XLR and 1/4 inch Humbuster outputs, S/PDIF out, a stereo effects loop, four jacks for switches or expression pedals, USB and MIDI. One output can feed the PA while the other drives a power amp or a stage monitor, and the loop allows the four-cable method.
Power is internal, from a standard IEC mains cable. No printed manual comes in the box; it, the AX8-Edit editor and Fractal-Bot for firmware and backups are free downloads. Fractal no longer makes it and firmware development has ended; used units turn up on versions from 8.02 to 10.01. Several owners disclose a loose or failed USB jack, which cuts off the editor, and rubber feet are often missing after Velcro mounting. Many used units come loaded with third-party presets and cab IRs (owners commonly offer a factory restore), and with Fractal's EV-1 expression pedal or a case.
