About the Ludwig No. 404 Acrolite 5x14" Aluminum Snare with Pointed Blue/Olive Badge 1970s
The Acrolite, catalog number 404 (often written LM404), came out in 1963 as Ludwig's low-cost student snare and is still made as a reissue. This is the 1970s version, made in Chicago: a 5 by 14 inch seamless shell in Ludalloy, Ludwig's own aluminum, with a single bead, 8 bow-tie lugs, triple-flange steel hoops, a P-85 throw-off with a P-32 butt plate and an internal felt muffler set by a small round knob. It shares its shell with the Supraphonic, minus the chrome plating and with 8 lugs instead of 10.
Dating one takes care. The Blue/Olive badge replaced the 1960s Keystone badge around 1969 and 1970; pointed corners mark the 1970s badge, and rounded corners took over near the end of the decade. Many 1970 and 1971 drums carry a dated tag inside the shell, some 1970 badges have no serial, and drums dated 1969 to 1971 carry six-digit numbers between about 772,000 and 906,000; past that the serial is a loose guide. The first drums keep the shiny brushed shell of the 1960s; later shells are matte or wear a thin silver-grey paint that chips where knocked. Many come with the molded Ludwig case, a stand and a practice pad. Before buying, check the P-85: it is the known weak point and often replaced with a later Ludwig strainer, sometimes through an extra drilled hole. Also check the lug foam, that the hoops are round and whether the original wires, often a 12 strand set, are missing a strand.
