About the Marshall AFD100 Slash Signature Appetite For Destruction

The AFD100 is the head Marshall built around the Appetite for Destruction sound: a limited run of 2,300 made from 2010 into 2011, plus a Special Collectors Edition of 100 hand-signed heads in chrome with a road case, listed at USD 4,999 in 2011. A standard head came with a certificate, a cover, the footswitch, a booklet and a T-shirt.

It is a single-channel amp with two voicings on a switch: AFD, the record's sound, and #34, the JCM800 of the Use Your Illusion records. There is no clean channel. The effects loop switches in and out and has its own level, which owners use as a second master; a built-in power-scaling control (the EPA) sets the output, and the bias is automatic, started by holding the loop switch at power-up. The power tubes are 6550s from the factory; some owners run 6L6 or EL34 sets with the bias current adjusted (the manual's figure is about 38 mA).

The artist toured the prototype in 2010, used the amp live and on the Apocalyptic Love recordings beside a JCM800 through about 2012, then went back to Silver Jubilees, with AFD100 dummy heads on stage for a while afterwards.

The fault to know about is intermittent volume and gain drops, most often with the EPA below 12 o'clock. Owners blame mains fluctuations, tired power or preamp tubes, and a set of four resistors (R51, R52, R56, R57) that fail; engaging the loop, or a patch cable across it, masks it, and running the amp with the power low while faulty can damage the board. It also hisses, and needs a noise gate on a stage.

What owners have said elsewhere

Paraphrased from 348 discussion threads among 51 owners, 2019-2024. No names, nothing quoted.

No amp in this circle divides people more. Its owners say it does that Appetite sound straight in, no pedals, at any volume through the attenuator, and several call it the best Marshall they own or the one they would keep on a desert island. Its critics find it cold, shrill and thin with little low end, a one-trick amp with a digital edge that cannot be EQ'd out of its two voicings, flat on a stage, and more collectable than good. Several sold theirs over the volume drops alone.

Against the Silver Jubilee and the 2555SL the verdict is steadier: most owners of both prefer the Jubilee for gigging and for anything beyond one sound, with its two channels, real clean, lower noise and wider mids, and keep the AFD100 for recording and for that sound; the AFD100 holds its tone at low volume better. The settings that win people over are the master high (8 to 10) with the gain moderate (3 to 7), the room level set on the EPA and the loop; the amp has more gain than it needs, and for the #34 sound the trick is to back the gain off and push the front with an SD-1, a GE-7 or an EQ boost. Pair it with a Greenback, G12-65, Classic Lead or V30 cabinet rather than the T75-loaded 1960A/B.
