About the Moog Grandmother 32-Key Semi-Modular Analog Synthesizer
The Grandmother is a monophonic semi-modular analog synth with a 32-note velocity-sensitive Fatar keyboard, a built-in arpeggiator and sequencer and a real spring reverb tank; it plays with no patch cables. Its circuits follow Moog modules: Minimoog oscillators, a CP3 mixer, a 904 filter, a 911 envelope, a 902 VCA and a 905 reverb. The voice is two oscillators (the second syncs to the first and takes linear FM) plus white noise, into a self-oscillating 24 dB per octave ladder filter and a 6 dB per octave high-pass filter, with an ADSR envelope and an LFO with sample and hold. 41 patch points on 3.5 mm jacks override the internal wiring, so each section can serve a Mother-32, DFAM or Eurorack system.
Two things to know before buying. Key velocity is not wired to the sound inside; it only comes out over MIDI and a velocity output jack. And the sequencer stores 3 sequences of up to 256 notes, but there is no patch memory. The back has a 1/4 inch input for external sound, one 1/4 inch jack for both main and headphone output, 5-pin MIDI in, out and thru, USB MIDI, and clock inputs; the spring reverb can also process external sound. It measures 23 by 14.25 by 5.5 inches, weighs about 16 lb (7.25 kg) and runs from a 12 V, 2 A adapter, which comes in the box with patch cables, a cloth bag and the manual. Grandmother Dark is the same synth with an all-black panel. Owners add a Decksaver cover or a fitted case.
