About the MXR M102 Dyna Comp
The MXR Dyna Comp is the classic, simple two-knob compressor, with just Output and Sensitivity. It is not a transparent compressor: it adds a characteristic squeeze, punch and colour, which is the sound many players buy it for, even though it can darken the tone. It has been a standard on pedalboards for decades, and there is an internal trim pot for extra adjustment.

What owners have said elsewhere
Paraphrased from 323 discussion threads among 18 owners, 2024-2025. No names, nothing quoted.
Owners treat the Dyna Comp as the standard by which other compressors are judged, a classic loved for its squeezed, punchy character. Just be clear on what it is: with only two knobs it colours the tone and gives you limited control, so owners argue endlessly about how subtle it really is, and some find it finicky to dial in. There is a useful trick for an always-on sound: keep the attack (sensitivity) high, which is actually its least-compressed position, and blend in only a little compression from there, since the controls are not intuitive and a quick demo helps. If what you really want is a transparent or highly controllable compressor, owners point instead to blend-equipped or studio-style units such as the Wampler Ego, Keeley Compressor Plus, Xotic SP, Boss CP-1X or an Origin Effects Cali76.
