Nobels ODR-1X

About the Nobels ODR-1X

The Nobels ODR-1 is a more transparent, full-range overdrive with a cult following. Despite being a 'green' pedal, it is not a Tube Screamer: it lacks the TS mid-hump and instead sounds like your own amp turned up. It comes in several versions (the standard ODR-1, the Ltd with a full Spectrum bass knob, the ODR-S, the newer ODR-1X and a mini), and the sound has been widely copied and modelled.

Owners are unusually united on the ODR-1: many call it a favourite and one of the best overdrives of recent years, an always-on pedal that cleans up nicely with the guitar volume. The key thing to understand is that, though it is green, it is not a Tube Screamer; it is more open and natural, without the TS mid-hump, and sounds like your amp cranked. Its one real quirk is a bass-heavy voice, so owners value bass control: pick a version with a full Spectrum bass knob (the Ltd or newer models) rather than the internal switch, or trim the lows with an EQ. Against a Tube Screamer, some prefer the ODR-1 outright for its openness, while others treat them as different tools that pair well, the transparent ODR into a mid-humped TS. If you want to try the sound cheaply, it is well represented elsewhere: Line 6 added it to the Helix, the Keeley Noble Screamer combines an ODR-1 and a TS808, and the Wampler Belle is often called close to the vintage ODR-1.
