The APH-2 is the artist's version of Seymour Duncan's Alnico II Pro: wound hotter than the plain APH-1 so that his newer guitars would sound like the overwound set in the Derrig replica, wax potted, with a maple spacer under the coils and a long-leg baseplate. It arrived after 2008; the 2008 signature Goldtop still shipped with plain APH-1s and a treble bleed. Zebra, reverse zebra and double black versions sound the same. The Derrig look is both cream bobbins on top, which takes a zebra neck and a reverse-zebra bridge (part APH2sRZ) with the screw poles nearest the bridge.

Seymour Duncan followed it with the Slash 2.0 (Alnico 2, hotter) in 2023 and the Slash 3.0 (Alnico 5, hotter again) in 2026. The artist's own guitars carry production APH-2s, and he fitted them to the Jessica.

Against the plain APH-1 the verdict is split along era lines. The APH-2 has more bite, output and compression and sits darker; the APH-1 is more open and clearer, and many prefer it, above all the 1980s MJ-wound sets, for the Guns and Snakepit era sound, keeping the APH-2 for the current one. The one thing most agree on is the neck: the APH-2 neck runs muddy and dark, and the favourite pairing here is an APH-2 in the bridge with an APH-1 in the neck (the 2017 Anaconda run shipped that way), or an Alnico 3 magnet swapped into the neck for clarity. Against Gibson's own Slashbuckers in the 2020 Collection guitars, most who tried both find the Duncans clearer, less muddy and quieter at rest, though a few prefer the Gibsons.

On fitting them: set the height by ear, bridge first and the neck balanced to it so switching gives no volume jump, then the pole pieces for clarity, and note the starting measurements. The swap itself is a simple solder job, but practise on a cheap guitar first, keep the iron off the braided leads, measure the resistance before and after, and keep the original pickups for resale.
