About the Tokai SS-70

The SS-70 is not a normal big-headstock Silver Star but a one-off limited model of 1981-82 copying Fender's The Strat of 1980, the Special Strat of Tokai's 1982 Special Limited Products catalogue, with a walnut body, matching-finish neck and headstock, brass knobs and a heavy brass bridge and trem block, a four-bolt neck with the serial on the neck plate (only this and the rare 1982 SS60 carry one; three-bolt Silver Stars have it on the headstock decal), the spaghetti logo of before late 1982, and U- or E-stamped grey-bottom pickups. Top of the line in its day, and heavy, about 3.8 kg. Owners date theirs to 1981 and 1982.

The best-priced as cards, a row of them; every other ad as a line, by ask. Each ask is the seller’s own number; the platform’s mark opens the listing. Each one says when we last confirmed it at its source: the price and availability are from that visit, so check the marketplace before you go.

No typical price yet for this one, so: one email when a new listing appears, with its ask. Never more than one a day. No account; a link to stop in every email.

Every recorded sale, one point each: 11 of them, placed by the day the ad went up. Too few sales to draw a trend through them without inventing one, so the points speak for themselves. Condition is mixed, so some of the spread is a mint against a fair rather than the market moving.

What owners have said elsewhere

Paraphrased from 10 discussion threads among 10 owners, 2021-2024. No names, nothing quoted.

Owners say it plays beautifully and sounds really great; owners call it a beauty, top of the line at the time and a very good instrument like any vintage Tokai, with the caveat that the brass knobs tend to have been swapped for plastic on many, and that it is not especially valuable, since even Fender's original The Strat does not fetch crazy money.
