Universal Audio UAD-2 Satellite Thunderbolt 3 OCTO Core Desktop DSP Accelerator

About the Universal Audio UAD-2 Satellite Thunderbolt 3 OCTO Core Desktop DSP Accelerator

The UAD-2 Satellite Thunderbolt 3 OCTO Core is a desktop DSP accelerator for Mac and Windows 10: its eight SHARC processors run UAD plug-ins so the computer does not have to. It connects over Thunderbolt 3, has two Thunderbolt 3 ports for daisy-chaining and works with Thunderbolt 1 and 2 devices. A Mac with a Thunderbolt 1 or 2 port needs Apple's Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter, which is not included; a Windows computer needs a built-in Thunderbolt 3 port and 64-bit Windows 10. It can be combined with other UAD-2 devices, such as PCIe cards and Thunderbolt UA interfaces, to add DSP. This Thunderbolt 3 unit has a front-panel power switch and a backlit UA logo.

The unit comes with its power supply but no Thunderbolt 3 cable, though used units are often sold with one added. The Core package carries the Analog Classics Plus bundle: the 610-B Tube Preamp and EQ, and legacy LA-2A, 1176LN and 1176SE, Fairchild 670, Pultec EQP-1A and Pultec Pro.

Plug-ins are licensed to a Universal Audio account and run on hardware registered to it, and the software download and authorization need an internet connection. On a sale the owner transfers the unit, with any extra plug-ins, to the buyer's account. Some used units are sold with the previous owner's extra plug-ins, but moving the library is that owner's choice: some keep it or charge extra for it.
