Xotic SP Compressor

About the Xotic SP Compressor

The Xotic SP Compressor is a very compact, board-friendly compressor built on the classic Ross/Dyna-Comp circuit. A simple Volume and Blend interface sits over internal dip switches that add extra headroom, attack and high-frequency blend options, plus a boost, and it can run at higher voltage for more clean headroom. Its tiny footprint is a big part of the appeal.

The Xotic SP is a favorite compressor in this group, and it shows in how often people just recommend it, unprompted. Owners say they love it, call it really perfect for their playing, and recommend it enthusiastically alongside a Wampler Mini Ego, with the tiny size repeatedly called out as a plus for a crowded board. Under the hood it is a Ross-style compressor with internal dip switches for tailoring it, and running it at a higher voltage gives more clean headroom. It is not universal, though. One owner could not get along with it and finds a Wampler Ego easier to dial in a good setting, another moved his whole rig from Wampler Egos and Xotic SPs to a cheaper Mooer 9 Yellow that suited his tone, and one who liked the SP for its size ended up preferring a Keeley after trying a friend's. For a small, quality Ross-style compressor, though, it stays one of the most recommended here.
