Yamaha NS-10M

About the Yamaha NS-10M

The NS-10M is Yamaha's passive two-way sealed speaker, made in Japan: an 18 cm white paper-cone woofer (part JA-1801), a 3.5 cm soft-dome tweeter, a 2 kHz crossover, 8 ohms and 90 dB sensitivity. Each cabinet measures 382 by 215 by 199 mm, holds 10.4 litres and weighs about 6 to 6.5 kg. It needs an external amplifier; Bryston and Yamaha P-series amps are the ones paired with them.

Three versions carry the name. The original, launched in 1978 as a home bookshelf speaker, stands upright with snap-on front grilles and press-down terminals. The NS-10M Studio of 1987 lies horizontal with its badge and terminal panel turned to match, drops the grille fittings, and has a redesigned tweeter and crossover and screw terminals; it is rated 60 W program and 120 W peak where the original is rated 25 W, and reaches 60 Hz instead of 85 Hz. The NS-10M Pro, also from 1987, has the new tweeter and terminals but stands upright with a removable front cover and a PRO label beside the tweeter. Both newer versions have a protruding tweeter grille, and the Studio is badged NS-10M STUDIO on the front. Production ended in 2001.

Pairs were matched at the factory: the two cabinets share a serial number ending in A and B (or L and R), or carry close numbers. Look at the woofers: cones dent, tear, rub or yellow with age, and replacement woofers are made. Dented tweeter grilles and dust caps are common marks. Drivers blow when pushed too hard, so some owners fit fuses.
