About the Yamaha YAS-23 Alto Saxophone
The YAS-23 is Yamaha's E-flat student alto: a yellow brass body, neck and bell under clear lacquer, nickel-plated power-forged keys, an adjustable plastic thumb rest, tapered pivot screws, stainless steel springs and waterproof leather pads. It has a front F key but no high F# key, so the range runs from low B-flat to high F. It was made in Japan and carries a Japan mark below the thumb hook or on the bell. It followed the YAS-21, stayed in production into the 2000s and was replaced by the YAS-26. Some were sold under the Vito name; those are the same horn, made by Yamaha for that brand. The usual outfit is the Yamaha hard case with a plastic Yamaha 4C mouthpiece, ligature and cap.
On a used one, wear gathers on the back of the body under the thumb rest, on the side of the bell that rests against the leg, on the bottom bow and on the neck, and small dents on the bow or the bell rim are the usual damage. Look for spotting in the lacquer around solder joints, resoldered posts or guard braces, and missing or replaced key pearls. Necks get swapped, sometimes for a new or upgraded Yamaha neck, so ask whether the neck is original, and check the neck cork, a common replacement. Unless it has just been serviced, budget for pads, corks and regulation.
