How he got here

  1. 2009

    Before YouTube

Flea is the reason he plays bass; Victor Wooten is his other great influence.

“He's the reason I play bass but Victor is definitely a great source of inspiration for me.”

He taught himself, slap included, and then studied for four years with Gary Willis at ESMUC, the Catalan conservatory in Barcelona.

    Covers straight into the interface

In 2012 he started posting bass covers, and none went through an amp: the bass went straight into an M-Audio Fast Track interface and GarageBand, filmed on an iPhone.

“I never record my bass covers with an amp. The bass goes directly to my M-Audio Fast Track audio interface. All you hear is the bass itself.”

    1977 Fender Jazz Bass

His main bass for those covers was an all-original 1977 Fender Jazz Bass, chosen because it sounded closest to Flea's '61. By 2015 he no longer had it.

“I've choose my 77 because it's the one that sounds more similar to flea's 61 JB.”

Fender Custom Shop Pino Palladino Signature Precision Bass Relic

For Motown and soul covers he played a 2010 Fender Custom Shop Pino Palladino Precision with flatwounds. Custom shop Fenders, he says, are in another league from production ones. In 2025 he filmed a new demo of the model: the neck is thick, 44 mm at the nut, but you get used to it.

In his own words

Gear and tone

How do you get such a clean bass sound?

A good technique :) A good bass adjustment so there's no fretbuzz... and that's all! I don't use compressor, eq or amp on my videos!

Watch: ED SHEERAN - Thinking Out Loud [Solo Bass Arrangement] by Miki Santamaria ↗2015

Do heavier woods sound better?

How do you make a passive bass heard live?

Does changing the RF mode always stop wireless dropouts in crowded venues?

Buying advice

What bass would you get on a tight budget?

i'd go for a Yamaha TRBX 304, or a BB424... or an Ibanez Soundgear

Which Line 6 Relay wireless does he recommend instead of the G70?

How does the Modulus Flea bass compare with Fender's Flea Jazz Bass?

The modulus is a better bass generally speaking, the carbon fiber neck gives it a unique tone. But this fender sounds more like wood, it has a little more bottom. It depends of your preferences.

Is the Yamaha BBP34 much different from the older BB2024X?

Setup and care

Which strings does he use for slap, nickel or steel?

How much neck relief does he set for a low action?

low action also depends on the neck curvature, mine is almost flat, just a little bit of curvature.

Watch: Miki's Groove - Slap Bass Solo (Miki Santamaria) With TABS! ↗2020

Is a low action good for fingerstyle as well as slap?

yeah it's easier to play. And as I said I dont have super low action, so I dont get fret buzz unless I play hard

Playing and practice

How do you practise?

90% of the times I practice with the bass unplugged. The other 10% with headphones. I never really practice with an amp, I only use it for live shows.

Watch: Michael Jackson - Baby Be Mine [Cover by DaBeat, Miki Santamaria & Friends] ↗2015

How do you slap so smoothly?

the action of the bass has to be low, then you don't need to put much effort on your playing. I guess it's hours and hours of practice and then your playing becomes more relaxed cause you don't do unnecessary movements

Does the Yamaha THR amp seen in his videos shape the recorded tone?

nothing at all! What you hear it's just me and the bass! I plug the bass direct to the Native Instrument audio interface... no preamp or EQ at all.

Watch: Miki Santamaria's 2015 Pedalboard Review [ENGLISH SUBTITLES] ↗2015

the audio interface doesn't really change the bass tone, it's just an interface! I like the Native 6 cause it has 6 inputs and it's USB powered.

Songs and tunings

Why does he arrange songs for solo bass rather than guitar?

I can express myself much better with a bass than I do with a guitar. And I honestly prefer the sound of the bass for this type of arrangements! I'm in love with the sound of this instrument and I like to do arrangements like these where I can play melodies and chords and stuff
