Keeley Super Phat Mod Overdrive

Über Keeley Super Phat Mod Overdrive

The Keeley Super Phat Mod is Robert Keeley's take on the Boss BD-2 Blues Driver, a mod that began as a service on the Boss pedal and is now sold as its own overdrive. It keeps the BD-2's dynamic, amp-like feel and adds a phat mode that thickens the voice for a beefier tone, and there is a Germanium Phat Mod variant with its own crisp, sparkly character. Owners treat it as a wide-range overdrive, from light blues to heavier lead sounds.

Owners are big fans of the Phat Mod, several call it a forever keeper that never leaves the board, one owner's first Keeley pedal that sent them buying the rest. The recurring praise is range and dynamics: one owner rates it among the most versatile overdrives on the market, dialing everything from lightly overdriven blues to in-your-face old-school metal, and it stacks well with other drives. It is built on the Boss BD-2 Blues Driver, so it has that springy, dynamic feel, and the phat mode is the trick, kick it in with the gain up for the beefiest tone, and it pairs naturally with a real BD-2 or a transparent drive like a Wampler Belle. A couple of caveats: the Germanium version can sound brittle or too bright below noon and only comes alive in phat mode with the gain past twelve o'clock, one owner actually preferred a plain Keeley-modded BD-2 to the packaged pedal, and another, after long love, started to tire of it and eyed a Klon-style or Timmy-style drive instead.
