About the EVH Wolfgang Special

Where it was made matters most. The Wolfgang Special was first made in Japan (dated examples are from 2010), then in China (2012 and 2013), then in Mexico. Japanese ones have a birdseye maple fingerboard, stainless steel frets and USA-made EVH pickups. Japanese and Chinese ones have an oil-finished neck back where current ones use satin urethane, early Stealth Black ones have a flat top, and recent ones have a baked maple neck. The serial ends in C for China or M for Mexico, and the two digits after the leading letters are the year.

The build is a basswood body, a bolt-on quartersawn maple neck with graphite reinforcement, a 25.5 inch scale, a 12 to 16 inch compound radius, 22 jumbo frets and an ebony or maple fingerboard depending on the finish. Two EVH Wolfgang Alnico 2 humbuckers screw straight to the body. An EVH-branded Floyd Rose with a 1.625 inch (41.3 mm) locking nut carries a D-Tuna for drop D. The neck is specified at 0.805 inch deep at the third fret and 0.890 inch at the twelfth, and weighed examples come in at about 7.2 to 8.2 lb (3.3 to 3.7 kg). New ones come with a gig bag; Japanese and Chinese ones often come with an EVH hard case. Factory-refurbished ones have USED stamped on the back of the headstock and a new serial. Check the neck pocket and heel for cracks, and ask whether the original parts come with it, since tremolos, tuners and Tremol-No blocks get fitted.
