About the Fender ST-62
The ST-62 is Fender Japan's reissue of the 1962 Stratocaster, with an alder or basswood body, a slab rosewood board, a 7.25 inch radius and 21 vintage frets. Examples from the 1980s and 1990s were built at FujiGen. The first ones carry JV serials from the early 1980s, were sold only in Japan and have USA-made black bobbin pickups like Fender's Fullerton reissues of the time; their serial is stamped on the neck plate. Later serials are printed on the back of the neck, just above the plate: N serials date from 1993 to 1994, and examples from 1999 into the 2000s are marked Crafted in Japan. The neck heel carries a pencilled build date.
Standard ones have Japanese-made pickups. The ST62-TX has USA Texas Special pickups and an alder body, some (MH) with a headstock painted to match; the ST62-US and ST62-58US have USA Vintage pickups; the ST62-770LS has three Gold Lace Sensors and an active mid boost. The nut is about 42 to 42.6 mm (1.65 to 1.68 inch) wide, measured necks run about 0.80 to 0.87 inch deep at the first fret and 0.89 to 0.99 inch at the 12th, and weighed examples come in at about 7.0 to 8.1 lb (3.2 to 3.7 kg), most 7.5 to 7.9 lb. Originals often come with a Fender soft case, the arm and paperwork, and their saddles are stamped Fender. Pickups, pots, wiring and the switch are the usual replacements, so ask what is original, and check the finish around the neck pocket for small cracks.
