Fender Precision

About the Fender Precision

Most are vintage US Precisions built in Fullerton, California, from the mid-1950s to the late 1970s; Custom Shop reissues, Japanese-made basses and later US models also appear. The vintage ones have one split-coil pickup, volume and tone controls, a 34 inch scale and 20 frets.

1957 and 1958 necks are one piece of maple with a soft V back; late 1950s pickguards are gold anodized aluminum. Rosewood boards are standard from the late 1950s through the 1960s, with C-shaped necks and tortoise guards; early boards have clay dots, mid-1960s ones pearl dots. CBS bought Fender in 1965. Late 1950s and 1960s bodies are alder; 1970s ones alder or ash under polyurethane, with a maple or rosewood board and a walnut stripe down the back of the neck. A few have the narrow A neck, 1.5 inch at the nut.

Date one from the heel (6-58 is June 1958; later stamps read like 5 FEB 66 C), the pot codes (123-6642 is October 1966), the pickup bobbin date and the neck plate serial, an L number on 1965 basses; they can differ by a year or two. Nuts measure 1 11/16 to 1 3/4 inch on 1959 to 1966 basses and 1.61 to 1.67 inch on 1968 to 1978 ones; 1959 to 1968 necks are 0.80 to 0.86 inch deep at the first fret. Weighed 1956 to 1968 basses come in at 8.1 to 8.8 lb, 1971 to 1978 ones at 8.4 to 10.5 lb.

Expect refrets, new pots, pickups and pickguards, refinished bodies, extra screw holes and missing chrome covers.
