MXR M68 Uni-Vibe Chorus / Vibrato

About the MXR M68 Uni-Vibe Chorus / Vibrato

The MXR M68 Uni-Vibe is a compact take on the classic uni-vibe wobble, with both chorus and vibrato modes, so it works as two pedals in one. It is a small, solid-state circuit rather than the lamp-and-photocell design of the originals, which is why some players hear it as closer to a phaser than a true uni-vibe, though owners agree it lands in the right ballpark.

Owners like the M68 as the coolest, most characterful modulation on the board when a part needs some movement, and being a compact vibe-and-chorus in one small box is a big part of the appeal. Just go in with clear expectations: it is a solid-state circuit, not a lamp-and-photocell vibe, so several owners hear more phaser than classic uni-vibe in it, though most agree it gets you in the ballpark, more vibe than a Phase 90, and the thinner voice suits some placements. Placement is where owners spend their energy: a uni-vibe wants a strong signal close to the pickups, so many put it early, and the Hendrix trick of running fuzz into the vibe makes the effect much more pronounced, since distortion after it tends to wash it out, while others prefer it after their drives on a faster setting. It is not for the purist. A few flatly dislike it, one owner joked it is as much a uni-vibe as Michael Jordan was a baseball player, and those chasing the real thing move to photocell units like the Dunlop UV1, a Fulltone Deja Vibe or a Sabbadius Funky Vibe.
