MXR Smart Gate

About the MXR Smart Gate

The MXR Smart Gate (M135) is a noise gate, a pedal that mutes your signal whenever it drops below a set threshold, which is different from a noise suppressor that tries to filter noise out of the signal. It is known for cutting in quickly and cleanly, and it offers selectable modes so you can set it for a full gate or target just the hiss, mid or high frequencies. It is on the pricier side for a gate.

When owners here want a noise gate, the Smart Gate is the one many settle on, calling it the best gate they have tried and saying it simply works great, with minimal tone-sucking. What they like is how cleverly it behaves, it clamps down quickly and sharply when you stop playing but lets ringing notes decay, and unlike a Boss NS-2 you can choose a full gate or just shave off the hiss. Placement is the key tip: put it right after your drive and distortion pedals but before any delay or reverb, or it will chop off your ambient trails, and owners note this is far simpler than wiring an NS-2 with the four-cable method. Two honest caveats: it is an expensive addition, and, like any gate, it only mutes below a threshold rather than removing hum, so it will not fix a ground or shielding problem. A few owners with very high-gain rigs felt it (and most gates they tried) hurt their tone and preferred a Fortin Zuul or an ISP Decimator, but for most it does the job cleanly.
