About the ProCo RAT 2 Distortion
The RAT 2 is ProCo's analog hard-clipping distortion, with three knobs: Distortion, Filter and Volume. The Filter works in reverse of a normal tone knob, so turning it clockwise rolls off treble. Switching is true bypass, and it runs on a 9 V battery, in a compartment that opens without tools, or on an external supply. The steel box has a sloped face, glow-in-the-dark graphics and a status LED in the A of the logo; its footprint is about 3.5 by 4 inches (89 by 103 mm) and it weighs about 0.8 kg (1.6 to 1.7 lb).
The RAT 2 arrived in 1988, when ProCo gave the RAT the LED and the glowing graphics. Early units use the LM308 op-amp chip, and dated examples from 1990 and 1991 carry a Motorola LM308N; around 2000 ProCo replaced it with the OP07DP, which later units carry. Dated examples from 1990 to 2003 are made in the USA. Older units take power through a 3.5 mm positive-tip jack and need an adapter for a standard 9 V pedal supply, while recent ones have the standard center-negative barrel jack. Modified units are common, usually with a swapped chip or switchable clipping diodes, so ask whether one is stock. Owners also remove the battery door, swap its screw or take off the rubber feet to fit the pedal on a board; check what is missing.
