About the Tokai Stratocaster SS-40
The SS-40 is the 1982-83 Silver Star, Tokai's big-headstock seventies Strat, later the TSS40, one grade up from the SS-38 by way of its metallic custom colours, Metallic Red (MR, Tokai's candy apple red) chief among them, with a rosewood board on the MRR version; it keeps the cheaper trapezoid tuners and bridge of the low grades (the SS-48 and SS-50 got the better tuners), black-bottom flat-pole SS Hot pickups, a 21-fret neck about 40-41 mm at the nut, a 1982 serial beginning with 2, and a grade sticker at the base of the neck that is usually gone. Owners date theirs to 1982 and 1983.

The best-priced as cards, a row of them; every other ad as a line, by ask. Each ask is the seller’s own number; the platform’s mark opens the listing. Each one says when we last confirmed it at its source: the price and availability are from that visit, so check the marketplace before you go.
Price history
Every recorded sale, one point each: 15 of them, placed by the day the ad went up. Too few sales to draw a trend through them without inventing one, so the points speak for themselves. Condition is mixed, so some of the spread is a mint against a fair rather than the market moving.

What owners have said elsewhere
Paraphrased from 4 discussion threads among 14 owners, 2023-2026. No names, nothing quoted.
A metallic-red 1982 is called a truly amazing guitar by an owner who also has a 1960 Fender and finds the Tokai sounds great for less money; Tokai's red is said to be a deeper finish than any other red Strat, and one player still wishes the identical first proper guitar had never been sold, though the Silver Star necks are too narrow for some, and the line is said to flood the second-hand market.
