Walrus Audio Julianna Deluxe Chorus / Vibrato

About the Walrus Audio Julianna Deluxe Chorus / Vibrato

The Walrus Audio Julia is an analog (bucket-brigade) chorus and vibrato pedal, known for a dry-chorus-vibrato blend and a 'lag' voice control that give it a warm, warbly, slightly lo-fi character. The Julianna here is the deluxe, dual-engine version with presets. Its flanger sibling, the Polychrome, shares the same control set.

Owners reach for the Julia (and the deluxe Julianna) for warm, vintage chorus and vibrato that is easy to dial in, with a distinctive wonky warble that suits clean and jangly parts. There is one thing worth knowing going in: because it is an analog bucket-brigade design, it rolls off the high end on the wet signal. That warmth is part of the charm, but it can sound muddy, particularly when heavy distortion sits after it. That leads to the main placement debate. The conventional spot is after your dirt, but several owners run it before the drives (post-compressor) instead, which keeps the distortion bright and gives clean, subtler warble, since distortion after the pedal helps re-brighten the sound. Fans love its character for cleans; a few feel it does not win chorus shootouts and prefer brighter options like a TC SCF+, a Boss Waza vibrato or the cheaper Behringer UV300.
