Wampler Mini Ego

About the Wampler Mini Ego

The Wampler Ego is a well-regarded compressor whose standout feature is a blend knob, which mixes the compressed and dry signal for a natural, transparent result that keeps your picking dynamics. The full-size Ego has five controls (sustain, tone, attack, volume, blend); the Mini Ego here is the compact version with the same core sound. Wampler also makes the higher-end, 1176-style Ego 76.

Owners rate the Ego highly, and a fair few call it their favourite compressor: warm, low-noise, plenty of sustain and a long-serving board mainstay. The key to it is the blend knob, which lets you mix in dry signal for transparent, natural compression that preserves your dynamics, which is exactly why it gets recommended for country and chicken-picking. The comparison people always draw is with the Keeley Compressor Plus: both are excellent and come close to a boutique Origin Cali76 for around half the money, the full Ego has a proper attack knob (the Keeley only a two-position switch) and some hear it as a touch warmer, while others find the Keeley a hair cleaner. If you want more, there is the higher-end Ego 76 that some owners prefer over the standard Ego.
