About the Akai MPC1000 Music Production Center
The MPC1000 is Akai's compact standalone sampler and sequencer: 16 velocity- and pressure-sensitive pads in 4 banks, 32 voices of 16-bit, 44.1 kHz sampling, a 64-track sequencer, two Q-Link sliders and two effects processors plus a master effect. RAM is 16 MB as standard, expandable to 128 MB with the EXM128 board (about 136 seconds of mono sampling becomes 24 minutes 28 seconds), and many used units have it fitted. It measures 330 x 75.5 x 228.2 mm, weighs 3.45 kg (7.6 lb) and runs on 100 to 240 V with a standard IEC cable.
Work goes on Compact Flash cards, read by a computer over USB; cards larger than the 2 GB spec are common, and SD cards work through an adapter. The card slot is the weak spot: its pins bend or break, causing crashes on save or load, and the fix is a new socket or an internal 2.5 inch drive in the bottom bay. The original pad sensors lose sensitivity with age; the later black BK-N model has a one-piece sensor that fixed it, though some black units still have the old one, and many have had an aftermarket sensor kit fitted. The tact switches under the buttons wear out, button caps crack or go missing, the screen can dim and the volume knobs get noisy. JJOS, an aftermarket operating system, replaces Akai's: JJOS2XL cannot save until a password is bought, so check whether it is paid, while the free JJOS3 saves normally. Many units are customized; ask whether the original parts come along.
