About the Akai MPC2000XL MIDI Production Center
The MPC2000XL is Akai's sampler and sequencer: a 64-track sequencer (300,000 notes, 99 sequences, 20 songs), a 32-voice, 16-bit, 44.1 kHz stereo sampler and 16 velocity- and pressure-sensitive pads in 4 banks, with four pad-bank keys, Next Sequence and Track Mute keys, a tilting LCD, two MIDI ins and outs, a 50-pin SCSI port and a 100 to 240 V supply. RAM is 2 MB as standard (21.9 seconds of mono sampling) and takes 72-pin SIMMs up to 32 MB (about 6 minutes mono); many used units have the full 32 MB.
Many have had the floppy drive replaced with a Compact Flash reader, usually with a 1 GB card; others carry a Zip drive or an SD card drive. Optional boards are the IB-M208P (8 outputs plus S/PDIF), the EB16 effects board, the FMX008M 8 MB flash ROM and the IC-M2TC SMPTE board. The factory Studio version came with the output, digital and SMPTE boards, and the Studio Plus adds the EB16; many used units have the 8-output board and the EB16 fitted. The last operating system is 1.20; units also turn up on 1.14 or earlier.
The tact switches under the buttons wear out, so a full replacement is the usual service. Pad sensors lose response and get replaced, often with thicker aftermarket pads. The LCD dims, discolors or develops lines, and replacement screens are common. Sliders and jog wheels break, and power button caps go missing. Limited SE editions came in other finishes, such as an orange SE2 and a silver SE3.
