    Jazz, straight into the soundcard

    First uploads

His first uploads, in 2017, were playing videos: a jazz improvisation on How High the Moon with an Epiphone ES-339, recorded straight into the soundcard with no amp.

“this video which is straight into the interface and I can't help but sound like this”

    K-Line Springfield
    Main Strat

    K-Line Springfield

His main Strats since 2020 have been K-Lines, American-built boutique S-types, above all a blue Springfield with Lollar Dirty Blonde pickups. In 2026 he was still playing a K-Line with Dirty Blondes.

“K Line (blue) has Lollar Dirty Blondes, Eric Johnson Signature (black) has stock pickups, other strat has cs 69s”

    Kemper Profiler

He also owns a Kemper Profiler and builds presets for it, though the Fractal is what he gigs.

    Line 6 Helix Floor

A Line 6 Helix has been his everyday unit since about 2019, in the studio often as Helix Native straight into the DAW, on an Andy Timmons preset. In 2026 he was pairing it with a UAD Lion: the Lion for the amp, the Helix for cab, delay and reverb.

“used a Helix pretty much twice a day every day for 6 years”

    Long-serving modeler

    Fractal Audio FM3

Late in 2020 he got a Fractal FM3 and kept it for years: his weekly Fractal videos were built around it, run alongside the Helix and the HX Stomp.

“I do have the helix and fm3, but the posh reverbs are potentially a little DSP hungry - so outsourcing the reverb part potentially means I can run dual amps on the stomp”

By 2020 his pick was a Hawk Tonebird 3mm, the big pick viewers keep asking about. As a cheaper option he suggests D'Addario Black Ice picks in 1.5mm.

“I use Hawk picks tonebird 3mm. If that's a bit expensive though, Black Ice D'add/Planet waves picks in size 1.5mm are pretty decent”

Gear and tone

Which do you prefer, the Line 6 Helix or the Boss GX-100?

Personally I'm a daily user of the Helix.

Watch: BOSS GX100 - The GOOD and BAD That You Should Know BEFORE buying ↗2022

Does the GX-100 feel more responsive and lag-free than the Helix?

Not really, but Boss have the best (lowest) latency across any of the modelling devices, including Fractal, Line 6 and Neural.

Watch: BOSS GX100 - The GOOD and BAD That You Should Know BEFORE buying ↗2022

What amp are you going through here?

No amp here, just direct into the DAW.

What do you use to monitor what comes out of your HX Stomp?

I personally use JBL LSR305s, but you won't be hearing those here, just direct audio.

Buying advice

Would you choose the Fractal AM4, an HX Stomp or a Nano Cortex?

I would choose HX stomp and this over Nano Cortex. Without internet, the Nano Cortex cannot sensibly be edited, so if you're on a dodgy wedding gig with no signal, you're kind of cooked (ask David Beebee). As for vs the HX stomp, I personally feel like (this is subjective mostly) - the Fractal effects and amps are on average probably more versatile, maybe in some cases more realistic too (whatever that means).

What does the Fractal AM4 lack compared with the FM3 and FM9?

Looper, Plex block, Pitch block, multi tap, 10 tap delay are some that I can think of of the top of my head - as well as obviously the ability to run tons and tons of blocks

Watch: The Fractal AM4 is Fractal's Best Product Yet - INCREDIBLE - 247 Amps, Gapless Switching and More ↗2025

What is the difference between the Fractal AM4 and VP4?

AM4 and VP4 - simple(r) 4 Block units. The difference between the AM4 and the VP4? VP4 is EFFECTS ONLY - AM4 is all the Amp models from Fractal and a huge amount of Effects

For home playing, is a Vox AC15 worth getting over a Boss Katana?

I don't have a ton of experience with the Vox AC15, but my memory is that to get much breakup it will still be pretty loud. I guess the good news really is that you can find them used for a good price, so it might not hurt to scratch that itch?

Setup and care

Stock pickups or something else? And what strings?

Stock pickups, and the guitar was direct into the soundcard. Stringwise it just had 11 roundwounds on.

Watch: How high the moon - Epiphone Es 339 Jazz improvisation ↗2017

What strings do you usually use?

I tend to use D'Addario 10-46.

Watch the source ↗2023

Would you change the pickups in it?

The Sire pickups I've found to be ok, not mind-blowing. If I was going to change them out, I personally like lower-output vintage-style pickups like Fender CS69s or Lollar Dirty Blondes.

Does a better audio interface make guitar plugins sound better?

Audio interface definitely can make a difference to latency more than anything - but also you'd want something with Hi Z inputs for passive pickups presumably? I think there's probably a limit to how much difference you'd really notice tonally, but it's probably best not to go for the very cheapest?

Watch: Are Plugins the Future Of Guitar Tone? THIS Plugin Beats Neural DSP! ↗2022

Should you gain guitar input up to just below clipping for plugins?

Yeh that's advice that makes sense for using a microphone etc, but not for guitars with plugins. Signal to noise is a non-factor since the "self noise floor" of an audio interface is WAAAY lower than the noise floor of pickups which are inherently noisy anyway.

Watch: Why Are Neural DSP Gaslighting Us About Plugins and Input Gain? ↗2024

Where should a beginner set interface input gain for amp plugins?

It's not actually about what you see as the final dB - which interface are you using, for most of them, you're going to want to just set the input gain to minimum, and that'll get you closer to where you want to start
